The skeleton is arguably the single most popular Halloween character. Sure, fashions change and new characters come and go. But the skeleton, the witch, vampire and mummy have been Halloween staples for decades now. Let's talk about skeleton Halloween costumes.
One reason that skeletons make for a great costume is that they are incredibly versatile. After all, what is a skeleton but a dead person brought back to life on Halloween?
That means that every zombie or member of the walking dead could potentially be a skeleton … if they have experienced enough decay, of course.
Then there are popular mythic and religious characters that are at least part skeleton. For instance, the Grim Reaper is famous for having the face of a skeleton. Let us take a moment to look at a few of the most popular costumes that include skeletons.
Skeleton costumes are a great because gender is obviously not an issue.
There are no male or female skeletons, there are just skeletons. And because we all have them, skeletons are popular with every age group.
For example, there are skeleton costumes for infants and toddlers. These outfits are comfortable and easy to fit into. The standard skeleton costume for this age group includes a black bodysuit that looks exactly like a pair of pajamas with a white skeleton pictured on the front and sometimes even on the back. There is also half of a hood with a smiling skull printed on it. These costumes are popular with parents because they are a cinch to take on and off and they do not include separate accessories.
For adults, the standard skeleton costume is really not much different. Both male and female outfits come with a basic jumpsuit with a skeleton on the front and on the back. Oftentimes, this skeleton glows in the dark to add a bit of spookiness to your late-night get-togethers.
What else? As we mentioned, one of the scariest, most powerful skeletons of all is the Grim Reaper or Death. Of course, this mythic character is not a traditional skeleton, but he is always portrayed as at least part skeleton. For example, the face of the Grim Reaper is a skull and his hands are bony.
Although, we do not know about the rest of him because it is hidden by a long, hooded black robe.
When shopping for a Grim Reaper costume, there are three important elements to consider. First, you must purchase a costume that includes an oversized hooded black robe. Next, you must buy a plastic scythe. This is the tool that death uses to take souls. Lastly, it is important to include something skeletal. After all, it is Death we’re talking about.
If you don’t want to wear a skeleton mask all night long, it might be enough to put on a pair of skeleton gloves. This is a costume that was made famous in the popular Scream movies of the nineteen-nineties. Of course, the villain in that series carried a bowie knife rather than a scythe.
